The Atlas Mountains rise from the Atlantic Ocean and stretch all the way to the Moroccan Algerian border. At its highest point is Mount Toubkal at 4167metres; a popular trekking peak most of the year round.
People often ask us about treks that are off the beaten track, away from the tourist routes. This is becoming increasingly difficult to offer with certainty. New roads and tracks to once remote villages are making them more accessible for vehicles, while being of huge benefit to the locals; providing schools, electricity and perhaps some form of health care, it also lays the way open for people to build.
This means the traditional adobe and stone houses are being replaced by concrete blocks, which actually are often not as weather proof.
What does this mean for us trekkers… we have to go further and deeper to find the authentic Berber village away from the publicized routes.
